Using camera traps to study the age–sex structure and behaviour of crop-using elephants Loxodonta africana in Udzungwa Mountains National Park, Tanzania

چکیده
Crop losses to foraging elephants are one of the primary obstacles to the coexistence of elephants and people. Understanding whether some individuals in a population are more likely to forage on crops, and the temporal patterns of elephant visits to farms, is key to mitigating the negative impacts of elephants on farmers’ livelihoods. We used camera traps to study the crop foraging behaviour of African elephants Loxodonta africana in farmland adjacent to the UdzungwaMountains National Park in southern Tanzania during October –August . Camera traps placed on elephant trails into farmland detected elephants on occasions during the study period. We identified individual elephants for camera-trap detections. All were independent males, and we identified unique bulls aged – years. Two-thirds of the bulls identified were detected only once by camera traps during the study period. Our findings are consistent with previous studies that found that adult males are more likely to adopt high-risk feeding behaviours such as crop foraging, although youngmales dispersing from maternal family units also consume crops in Udzungwa. We found a large number of occasional cropusers ( of the bulls identified) and a smaller number of repeat crop-users ( of ), suggesting that lethal control of crop-using elephants is unlikely to be an effective longterm strategy for reducing crop losses to elephants.

Using dung bolus diameter for age estimation in an unstudied elephant population in Udzungwa Mountains, Tanzania
Savannah elephants make extensive use of montane forest in three Tanzanian massifs, including the highly biodiverse Udzungwa Mountains. We have begun the first study of the Udzungwa elephant population, which is perceived to be increasing and is compressed due to loss of connectivity with adjacent protected areas. Meanwhile, human-elephant conflict outside the forests is escalating. We tested a...

A 10-year study revealed that after severe poaching (>93% killed) of elephants (Loxodonta africana) in Zambia’s North Luangwa National Park (NLNP) during the 1970s and 1980s, the age of reproduction in females was greatly reduced. Fifty-eight per cent of births were delivered by females aged 8.5–14 years, an age at which elephants were reported to be sexually immature in nearby South Luangwa Na...
متن کاملSpatial behaviour of translocated African elephants (Loxodonta africana) in a novel environment: using behaviour to inform conservation actions
When animals encounter a novel environment they can either reject it and leave or accept it and explore their new home. It is important to understand what governs animals’ response to a novel place because of the fitness consequences and wildlife management implications entailed. Here I examine the spatial behaviour of translocated African elephants (Loxodonta africana) upon arrival at a novel ...
متن کاملQuantifying forest elephant social structure in Central African bai environments
Relatively little is known of social dynamics in forest elephants (Loxodonta africana cyclotis), although the fission-fusion model of sociality known in savannah elephants (Loxodonta africana africana) is used as a template. Until fission-fusion sociality or an alternative model is demonstrated, our understanding of how elephants use their environment remains incomplete. To date, there have bee...
متن کاملBeing stressed outside the park—conservation of African elephants (Loxodonta africana) in Namibia
The conservation of the African savanna elephant (Loxodonta africana) is of prime importance for many African countries. Interactions between elephants and humans are known to induce stress and thereby have the potential to affect elephants' fitness. In Namibia, anthropogenic disturbances are increasing due to increasing human population size and development, particularly near protected areas, ...
